About HFES XRTG
Human Factors
As defined by the International Ergonomics Association, "Ergonomics (or human factors) is the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system, and the profession that applies theory, principles, data, and other methods to design in order to optimize human wellbeing and overall system performance." Human Factors is a multidisciplinary field incorporating psychology, sociology, cognitive science, engineering, industrial design, physiology, statistics, and anthropometry to examine human-technology interactions.
HFES
The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society is dedicated to the betterment of humankind through the scientific inquiry into and application of those principles that relate to the interface of humans with their natural, residential, recreational, and vocational environments and the procedures, practices, and design considerations that increase a human's performance and safety at those interfaces.
HFES XRTG
The Extended Reality Technical Group (XRTG) is a technical group within HFES. The XRTG is concerned with human factors issues associated with human-virtual environment interaction. We wish to maximize human performance efficiency, ensure health and safety, and circumvent potential social problems that may occur through the use of virtual environments (VE), virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and extended reality (XR) systems (e.g., driving simulators, video games, or Google Glass). Researchers focus significant efforts on addressing human factors issues.
XRTG DEI Statement
HFES strongly values its vision of "a future in which the reach, relevance, and quality of human factors/ergonomics (HF/E) are greatly expanded by enriching the science and enhancing its impact on solving societal problems," including systemic racism. In support of this vision, we value and celebrate the diversity of students, practitioners, educators, researchers, and other individuals who engage in the profession of HF/E and the stakeholders who benefit from their practice.
Our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and belonging is a commitment to recognizing and celebrating the variety of characteristics that make individuals unique. These characteristics encompass a broad range, including, but not limited to: race, ethnicity, age, belief system, cognitive style, culture, (dis)ability status, education, gender, gender identity, gender expression, geographic background, job type (e.g., academic, industry, government/military/aerospace, consulting), language, marital/partnered status, national origin, physical appearance, political affiliation, religious beliefs, sex, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, theoretical perspective, and veteran status.
